The metal associed with ceramic or glass must have a close CTE in order to minimize residual stresses in the joint ,however we can assembly ceramic & glass to metal with different CTE with appropriate design. Metals most commonly used: kovar, copper, titanium, molybdenum, platinum, niobium, steel,stainless steel, tantalum and inconel alloy.

The braze alloy or glass to be used will depend upon various parameters : final temperature of use of the product, nature of the metal to be joined, several metals of different kinds to be joined. The following alloys Ag/Cu ,Ag/Cu/Pd , Au/Cu , Au/Ni , Ag ,Au ,Cu are typical and cover a large range of temperature from 780°C to 1080°C. The temperature of work for glass is around 900°C. The metal ceramic bonding requires first an intermediate metal layer on the ceramic to grip and the wettability of the solder

This metallization is performed according to various processes:

  • Sintering thick layer MoMn at high temperature
  • Thick layer of a reactive metal that chemically reacts
  • Thin layer of metal for instance deposit by sputtering process
  • The metal glass bonding requires prior oxidation of the metals to be joined to hang the glass on metal oxides

PNL INNOTECH can offer all of these technologies. The choice for one of these will depend upon the assembly design to be manufactured, the conditions of use and the cost requirements.



Particular case: brazed window and viewport

The hermetic joining of a window or viewport into a metal flange is a real interest for use in extreme conditions or whenever an absolute reliability is requested.


PNL INNOTECH‘s first choice for the assembly of a viewport goes for high temperature brazing so that it has necessary properties to resist to those hostile environment.


PNL INNOTECH has a recognized technology that permits to offer brazed windows to be used into optoelectronics and vision instruments for such high–tech applications as:

  • Epitaxial thin-film deposit
  • Optical spectrum analyzers
  • Infra-red detectors
  • Thermal imagers
  • Image intensification

Depending upon the operation wavelength of the customer’s device PNL Innotech can offer four standard types of UHV windows or viewport brazed on to metal flange:

  • Sapphire / titanium
  • Silica / titanium
  • Caf2 / titanium
  • MgF2 / titanium
